In August, I went to Asheville a week for vacation. I suppose it shouldn't be necessary for me to delve into all the reasons why I love this place, but the art scene is obviously one of the top reasons.
I wandered into the Bender Gallery on Biltmore Avenue when I encountered the most beautiful glass sculptures by the artist Karsten Oaks. I felt so inspired by her clever use of abstraction in form.
Oaks creates "dynamic symmetry" using ratios and spirals and consistently sticks to predetermined proportions. Her process creates harmony in what she says "would otherwise be a disorganized form."
I adore this sentiment from her artist statement that "this mild sense of chaos through the work's creation gives each piece its personality and character."
